Planning capacity
Choose redundancy before you choose size
The capacities listed are raw disk space. Mirroring or parity costs capacity but keeps your data safe when a disk fails, so size the plan for usable space:
- RAID 1 or 10 for the best write performance
- RAID 5 or 6, or ZFS RAID-Z, for the most usable space
- No RAID only when the data also lives somewhere else
Typical uses
What customers store
Off-site copies of production backups, video and image libraries, log archives, build artefacts and S3-compatible object storage running on software such as MinIO or Ceph.
Every plan has a 1 Gbit/s uplink, so restoring large backups does not turn into a weekend project.
Are the capacities raw or usable?
Raw. How much is usable depends on the redundancy you choose. With six 12 TB disks, RAID 6 leaves about 48 TB usable, RAID 10 about 36 TB.
Can you set up RAID for me?
Mention the RAID level you want in the order notes and we will configure it before handover. If you leave it out, the disks are delivered unconfigured.
Is this a backup service?
No. A storage server is a machine you control. You decide what runs on it and how data is protected, for example with your own backup software, ZFS snapshots or an object storage server.
How quickly is a server ready?
We install the operating system you choose and hand the server over within 24 hours of payment. The access details are in your dashboard.
